Folk Theatre

Like it's Folk Dance, Andhra Pradesh has evolved unique Theatre forms. Broadly they are Kalapam, where a single performer brings alive another character with his powerful narration and Yakshaganam where the performer plays multiple roles without change in make-up or costume and still makes the audience see all the characters of the story coming live in front of their eyes. Presently it is done in form of a musical play with emphasis on story telling and pronounced dramatics.

Shadow puppets and carved and chiseled figures of wood are the other folk theatre forms used for story telling. Here with darkness all around and the lights focussed just on the a human voice over narrates the story and makes the puppets perform all the emotionsThe themes are mostly from Hindu mythology, and next to that from folk tale, social concerns, and from history.
